How to Choose a Motivational Speaker

Here are 10 tips to make sure that you get the right person for the job.

1. Check their credentials. If a friend of a friend said that s/he knows someone that could help to motivate your company, would you trust them? What about looking online, in telephone directories and asking around to see if others have an inspirational speaker that they would recommend.

2. There are no regulated qualifications to obtain, or standards of speech to reach, so pretty much anybody can say that they are a motivational speaker. Just because somebody has the gift of the gab, it doesn't mean that they are a good motivational speaker. Alternatively, just because someone is successful in the world of business, entertainment of sport, in doesn't mean that they are the right person to help improve your business.

3. You will need to hear and see them speak in person before booking them. Whilst the website might look flashy and inspiring, the performance may be less so, and you don't want to be disappointed.

4. Knowing what the speaker has achieved will help you to choose the right motivational speaker. Is a former bank chairman the best person to tell you how to improve productivity in your factory? Is a former athlete able to relate to a room full of scientists?

5. What research will the motivational speaker do? How much will they want to know about your company and your industry? If they have a one size fits all approach then they might not be the right person to motivate your staff.

6. Will the audience relate to what the motivational speaker has done? Just because you've managed to obtain the services of one of your sporting heroes, it doesn't mean that the rest of your workforce will be impressed. If you're running a call centre, or a sales team, is a former model, or politician the right person you improve sales?

7. Is your chosen speaker actually inspirational? Will the audience be moved by what they have to say? Will it make a difference to their lives, and their performance whilst at work? It's all well and good having a celebrity to talk to your staff for an hour, but will it motivate the staff into being more efficient and effective?

8. Is the motivational speaker known? Is it better to have a celebrity or well known person speak to your staff, who maybe isn't as inspirational, or somebody who is not a household name but is quite capable of improving morale and teamwork?

9. What will the audience take away form this event? Will they be motivated and keen to improve, and increase sales figures, or productivity? Or, will it be seen as a waste of time and money?

10. When will the benefits be seen? Are staff going to go back to their desks or machines, and immediately improve their performance, or will it be a gradual improvement, through better more efficient procedures and processes?
